Howdy. Thoktaz here. After a bunch of horrible hospital-time, I am returned to the land of the living(?). Perhaps you wonder "Who is this genius, this Chickthulhu-crafter of yore who is known to be so annoying?"

Probably not, though.
Still, let's pretend you ARE wondering. If so, you'll be super happy to know that the first order of business has been for me to rough draft my SoR fan fiction. Read it. You know you want to.

You are correct, sah. :) SE's beta(?) launches tomorrow, for now everyone just has the CE to tool around with. The "real game" will launch for pre-orders mere hours (well, about 24 of them) from now and then we'll all just fungasm to death as reward for our contributions!

...At least, as far as I understand? Tastyrice's comment makes me wonder. Hmm. Dev clarification needed!

Rad. :) If we can get everyone to convince a couple of people, we could get some crazy exponential preorders going. That's my goal!

Just like to remind y'all, in tl;dr form: More preorders = more game, when it's just two guys programming it. They can't trust a publisher to soak up the losses, they really are directly dependent on us voting with our wallets.

But also consider this: More preorders = more indie gaming in general. Economy encourages expansion. The market can only grow better from the support, as more people feel free to take a chance with a new idea.

And finally:
More preorders = better gaming, period.
The more we fund the solid indie developers, the more interest people take in the venue. The more people, the bigger the market. The bigger the market, the more likely that big name publishers will offer funding to indie developers or innovators in their own company.

This is how Nintendo made video gaming happen after it nearly died. Indie gaming has that spot, and the dry and dusty nature of clone-heavy cash-in games right now means that history is likely to repeat itself.

SoR deserves your money for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the sheer commitment of our two awesome developers. But really, there is no way to lose when you're investing in the future of your hobby...

...one evil tentacled Chicken God at a time.

That's what I'm talkin' about. Rock on, bro. :)

The Mad Crowing of Cluc'keh Chickthulhu at the Dawn Of All Mondays shall spare you! Maybe.
(I preordered too.)

"Free" gaming is like "free" cars, or socks, or condoms.
You get what you pay for.
SoR is an immense project, and by the time they end Alpha the developers will have provided a revolutionary gaming experience that is amazingly still without charge.

HOWEVER.

Unless these two guys are secret millionaires, they can't develop the game in a financial vaccuum. They need to spend time earning the money for silly and frivolous things like food, and electricity. You might be surprised at how important these things are to game development. It's why not so many games are developed in Zimbabwe.

So paying for a game isn't because the developers are "selling out", it's so that we can reap the benefits of allowing them to focus their time and energy on producing something which we enjoy. The fact that they will be producing a legally free and complete experience for the unpaying masses deserves admiration, not complaint.

I've seen too many great projects derailed because the people involved are human beings who have realistic needs that their community was unwilling to support. If I can help it, SoR won't be one of those games.

66% off on Desura right now. Put your money down. For less than grabbing a heart-attack-assist at McDonald's, you can perpetuate a project that is beneficial not only to your personal future satisfaction, but the indie gaming community at large.

/soapbox.

Seriously, though. This looks amazing. I will test this mother@%&#% to no end. All I need is a manual of some sort. Even a readme. Even a blurb that I can add to the wiki. I'll write a guide and everything, filling it with pithy humour and chickens.
And yes, that means you can employ me. :P I write and design professionally.
But outside that, I'm just psyched about a DF game that anyone can pick up, and I want to be involved. I could be more involved if I knew how to play! :D

I'm obsessed with this game, which is saying something. Why? Cause I can't figure out how the @%^& to play it. Some sort of documentation on what to do other than dig, chop down a tree or two, then watch my dwarves stand there between chicken slayings... What am I missing?
Despite that, it -looks- fun, and if I could figure out what the hell I was doing I'd be totally hooked. I learned to play Dwarf Fortress. It's got to be possible.
Help me, Tasty-one-wasabi, you're my only hope.
Urist would want you to.
