I am going to have to agree with Mateos here that the British infantry did not fire the STEN holding the magazine and not only because of misfires, but also because the recoil of the weapon as well as other factors causing the soldier to shake (aka explosions) could cause the soldier to forcibly pull the magazine out of the magazine well. I know this because I have personally have talked with British veterans of WW2 who had used the STEN in combat. I have also fired the STEN on a firing range and have experienced this for myself. The best place to hold the STEN when firing is actually right below the bolt handle is and angled part that is comfortable and safe to hold. Here is an example of what I'm talking about Imfdb.org . I am not saying no soldier would hold the STEN by the magazine in some situations like when they are on the march or if they don't have the time to aim, but in all other situations they didn't hold the STEN by the magazine.
