It's still a long way off. It will have 100 levels.. level 1 is still being worked on. Getting there though!

From what I've seen, the way it is currently, if you die, your char dies. You have to remake a char and start from fresh again. :)

I agree. The revival items were removed. The ORIGINAL SAO without Kayaba taking over from the original planned game had revival items. There is also a revival item Kirito gets at one point.
