Dominions 4: Thrones of Ascension

Game review

Dominions 4 is a huge and unilateral improvement over Dominions 3, incorporating more of everything that 3 has to offer (units, nations, spells, etc) as well as a few (greatly appreciated) new things: a random map generator, a moderately well equipped map editor, the eponymous thrones, and caves. Moving over to this game from Dominions 2 was a bit less clear cut of a descision for me; I really liked the 'special dominion' mechanic in dominions 2, as well as the fact that your nation's fort type was purchased with god points. The new system feels cleaner in a lot of ways, and is certainly easier to explain to newcomers, but the old system has a lot more strategic depth. I also feel like the extent to which the game can be easily modded hasn't changed positively very much. Nonetheless, as a game Dominions 4 stands clearly as the pinnacle of (or possibly the only extant example of) modern turn-based tactical medieval fantasy themed civ-style wargaming.
