I didn't manage to reproduce it yet, I have a few idear of what can cause the issue, I'll keep you updated.
In a mean time you can try pressing ALT+TAB to exit and come back in the application when you get the black screen, it should allow you to play until I submit a fix.

Yes it is, maybe you should look in the credit, and then try to do something while you select your character, curious thing could happen at the battle launch time, we never know :)

Sorry, but you cannot directly use the keyboard as a controller for two peoples, the problem is that in some keyboards you have a limited number of keys you can press at the same time( Ghosting ).
And that make it impossible for two player to play the jamsouls on the same keyboard.

You can run it in fullscreen, go to the option, set Fullscreen to "On" and restart the game
