Not planning on replacing any others at this time

They did turn out quite nice, didn't they? :)
Had a heck of a time getting the voice actress to record the lines for me ...

Nope, no backups are required. You probably want to grab the file with the title "Mike & Pete's Fun Half-Life Sound Pak v.14 Installer for STEAM (or WON)".
This one can install itself, which makes things easy for ya. (It doesn't have any snark sounds in it though - I haven't had time to update it yet.)

I was in a rush and just edited an image I found on the net. Hopefully I don't get any lashes for that

Looking interesting. Strong similarities to Blade of Darkness (aka Severance), an older game that I absolutely love.

Will this game have the ability to target specific spots on the enemy? I'd love to be able to hack off someone's limbs and then let them bleed to death while they try to bite my legs off. >:)

This mod is fantastic. I still haven't finished it yet (stuck on a level) but what I've played through so far is great. Cool concept!

That would be way cool. It probably won't fit 100%, I read that the BM team made some changes to the story/scenarios, but hey don't let that stop you. A lot of what we did doesn't really make sense anyway.

That sounds like a huge problem. Is this for the new Source version? I gave a few of the levels a quick try and didn't come across any problems at all.

Worst case scenario: activate cheats to equip yourself with the HEV suit and all that. Hope that works for ya

I tried to tag it as a HL:Source mod, but Mod DB doesn't have that as a category. So I could only link it to our regular profile, which is listed as a HL1 mod

Hehe, yeah that's a good one.

Extending this out to the expansion packs and even HL2 is totally off the radar screen for us. I mean, it's been almost 10 years and we still haven't finished HL1. My goal is to just complete HL1, package it up nice and fancy, and let that be that.

If anyone wants to continue our noble work, I'd be happy to provide tips/advice

Killing Barney is always gud; I like to do it after he tells you to shoot his helmet. But yikes, crashes is no good.

Stupid question: where do I go to download maps? I was expecting to find some here, especially these contest winners, but I don't see any links ...

Thanks for the praise and bug report, too.. I'll have to look into that later!

Regarding the post-ambush scene, those lines were created in-game by modifying the "sentences.txt" file, so you won't find any 1 WAV that contains all of the lines.

For your pleasure, I've extracted those lines from the text file for you to see:

HG_DRAG1A hgrunt/clik (t50) my private is (t55) fivemeters (t50) tango(e15) all.
HG_DRAG2A hgrunt/c2a3_ambush_vox(s20 e25) clik (t50 p110) my private is (t55) tenmeters (t50) alert(e20) creeps(e30) hot(s35 e70) ***(s65).
HG_DRAG3A vox/(t20) doop that is a biohazard, please point it at freeman(e85) ***(s85) back(e90) chamber
HG_DRAG4A hgrunt/,
HG_DRAG5A hgrunt/c2a3_ambush_vox(s20 e40) (p80) uhh

The only thing I can suggest is that he re-installs using the self-installer:
Moddb.com

I've never seen that error before, but I'm guessing he installed the mod using the zip version, which was built for STEAM only. (It's been so long I don't remember what the difference is, but it's worth a shot!)

Hmm.. don't think I've seen that problem before.

Maybe get him to try re-installing the mod? He's playing using the original HL, right? Not HL:Sauce? 'cuz I'm pretty sure this mod doesn't work for HL:Sauce ...

Wow... I can't believe people are actually checking out screen shots.

Folks, I put these up as a joke. This is a SOUND replacement mod -- no cool new maps, graphics, or whatever (well, mostly not)

... Or, maybe you're all in on the gag? ^_^

Could do, but then where would we draw the line? It'd go on forever and ever and ever, like the theme song to Lambchop's Playalong.

Hmm.. actually, maybe we could do a Pokemon-inspired thing... So change the snark's sounds to: "snark!", "snark-snark!", "snaaaaaaaaark"

hahaha... yah, maybe we could do that :)

Ah, yah... That's one of the hard things that I didn't write about in the docs. There are a lot of scenes in HL where 2+ guys talk, one after another. We actually didn't change it at all - we just found a way to work around it.

Here is a really techie explanation of it. You may want to load up the sentences.txt file and open the WAV files for that scene you're asking about, so you can see what I'm talking about here.

Each segment of speech is its own WAV file, and for each "actor" in the scene, their first line is played, then the second, third, etc. The timing of when each actor's line is started is programmed into this scene. A few key things to note here:

1) Each actor is independent: playing their WAV file does not affect when the other actor starts talking - this is controlled just by the scene scripting
2) Generally speaking, each WAV file can be as long as you want, but if the actor is scheduled (by the scene scripting) to start talking again after X seconds, then if your first WAV file is over X seconds long it will get cut off when the second WAV is played! Additionally, this also means that if you want the actor to do a monologue, then you record one big long recordings and chop it up into 2+ wAV files (e.g. the first WAV contains the first X seconds, and the second WAV contains everything after)
3) SOMETIMES your lines will just simply get cut off after a certain number of seconds.. again, due to the scene scripting. If that happens, well, can't help you there.

Since we never figured out how to change these scenes, we found a work-around: Using a stop-watch, we carefully timed exactly when each person started talking, then we chopped up our own recordings to match with that timing. We also had to insert huge chunks of empty silence into various WAV files so that the back-and-forth conversation worked well.

So, yeah, that's how we did it

Sweet! I found this game in a bargain bin a few years back, played it to death, then started playing it again. I had no idea so many mods existed for this game... Looks like it will become a time-suck for me again very soon ^_^

Hey all

Sorry for the long, looooong delay in responding.

andy1942liu & rmatt999:
glad you like it - always cool to hear!

didit:
importing your own sounds is a matter of getting the new sounds and then naming them and placing them in the proper folder within the Half-Life directory. Here's a full write-up of the steps here:
Studiosound.planethalflife.gamespy.com

hlnerd:
Thanks! Sorry, but we don't plan on working on the HL expansions, or HL2 for that matter.. Too much non-Half-Life "life" stuff going on these days -- and we're still not done HL1!

Bfett:
Yah, that's a little weird. See, HL doesn't distinguish between shots to the face, arm, or whatever. So we decided to roll with that and come up with whatever sounded good :)

henry132:
Windows Sound Recorder is a piece of crap. Go download "Audacity" -- it's free open source software, and totally awesome. It has lots of special effects and can mix sound files together and stuff.
To be honest, I don't really remember how the intercom bit works. I think we just copied the speaker sound from the original line, then inserted our own voices with some serious echo effect..

Good luck with your own mod!

this mod doesn't replace anything except sound files and subtitles. Well, plus a model or two, but none that are in the initial tram sequence. Is normal Half-Life working for you? If it isn't working either, then maybe you can try re-installing Half-Life. However, if it works fine then please give me more details about your install and I can try to assist

ash_link:
For kicks, I would highly recommend SMOD, except that's for HL2 only. Haha.. I kid. Seriously though, that's a very open question. For fun & giggles, I like things that are completely off the wall, or unexpected. From games, I think the most gleeful fun I ever had was with the "Rocket Crowbar" mod for HL. It had seriously wacky weapons, like one that fires out scientists and barnies that explode when you get too close to them.

Glad a lot of you like it! Unfortunately you can't have something that's funny for everyone, but at least you can get a kick out of the subtitles. (Actually, I get a kick out of the fact that you get a kick out of the subtitles. :) )

We've got no plans to do subtitles throughout the entire game, though I can see the humour potential in that. (That would require some coding, which isn't what we tackle in this so-called mod.)
