This version on ModDB does not include hl2.exe and requires Portal to be installed. The version on Steam includes all necessary files for a standalone game, but it requires you to play from an account which owns Portal.

I didn't create a standalone exe. This mod only includes the files necessary for a sourcemod and requires you to have the base game installed via Steam. For the Steam standalone version, I just copied the necessary binaries from the Portal directory.

1. Extract the zip.
2. Move the Portal Pro folder into your steam SourceMods folder (e.g., C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods).
3. Restart steam and Portal Pro should be in your games list.

Make sure you have Portal 1 installed on the same drive (D). I think if it's installed in a different place (or not installed at all), Steam won't recognize the mod.

If you dropped the portal pro folder into sourcemods and restarted Steam, it should show up in your Steam library. Maybe you copied the contents of the portal pro folder rather than the folder itself? Your sourcemods folder should only have a folder called "portal pro" in it and nothing else (if you don't have any other source mods installed). For example, look for a file called "gameinfo.txt". The full path should be "D:\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods\portal pro\gameinfo.txt". If it's anything else or you renamed the folder, it won't work.

It's not a virus, it's a program that lets the steam version launch the steam overlay. The long explanation is here: Steamcommunity.com
The program itself is from here: Code.google.com

If you don't believe me, you can always use the latest version from ModDB which does not include that exe.

I don't have any experience changing the crosshairs. Sorry I can't help. "Blue Portals" and "Portal: Project Beta" both have modded crosshairs so you could try asking the teams behind those mods.

In the zip there's a file called readme.txt. It has instructions for how to install and uninstall.

You can just make an empty folder called sourcemods where it should be.

If you're asking HOW to uninstall, there are instructions on every download page and in the readme that comes with the mod. If you're asking something else then please rephrase your question as a complete sentence.

That text file is all you need. Click "read more" under the download description to read the installation instructions. Basically you just need to replace the existing GameInfo.txt file.

You have a couple of options to fix this. You can update Portal to the SteamPipe version. In your steam library right click Portal, go to properties, select the "betas" tab, and opt into the SteamPipe beta. Or you can download version 1.2.

I made the mistake of releasing this too early. Apparently SteamPipe for Portal is still in beta and not everyone has it yet. It really sucks that I can't put out a version that just works for everyone at the moment, but hopefully the beta will end soon.

I patched the Desura version to fix this a couple of days ago, but it hasn't been authorized yet. If you want to fix it yourself in the meantime, you can download the SteamPipe patch or version 1.2.1 from moddb. Moddb.com

Yep I just verified this myself. Apparently Desura is still using an old version (1.1). I'm working on patching it to the latest version now.

Thanks. I probably won't make any more levels for Portal 1, but you can play my Portal 2 workshop items. Steamcommunity.com

What version did you download or are you using Desura? Desura might be installing an older version which doesn't work with the latest version of Portal.

Fewest portals challenges, along with fewest steps and least time, almost always involve solutions that went against my design philosophy at the time. I didn't want any part of the mod to require anything beyond the basic portal skills including peek-a-portal. If I set goals with this mindset, they would be trivial for most people, but if I go the other way and require the absolute minimum, they would require glitches and **** off a lot of players. It completely depends on the audience.

"Explore", for example, can be done in a minimum of 1, 2, or 3 portals depending on what techniques you're willing to accept. 3 is only mildly interesting for people who don't peek-a-portal, but 1 (requires ABH or item wall climbing) would aggravate most players. It's an interesting design topic, and I'd like to hear your suggestions.

There is a steam thread that has goals for each level.
Forums.steampowered.com
Based on that thread, the best way to do "explore" is 2 portals.

Apparently this is somewhat possible, but you'd be missing a lot of assets, and there's no guarantee that the levels would even be completable. I've never tried it myself. Forums.steampowered.com

Seems likely. People tell me they've gotten Portal mods to work on the Mac version with some trickery, but I don't know if Linux installation will be straight forward like it is for Windows.

In both instances the moving acid is a func_water_analog parented to a moving entity. The fog is mocked by an env_fog_controller which is enabled when you fall into the water and disabled when you leave.

Thanks,

Regarding getting Portal Pro to work on Mac, many people have gotten Portal: Prelude to work for Mac OS X by making a backup of their portal folder and copying the contents of the mod over the original Portal files. Here's a tutorial:
Wikihow.com

One person has verified that this works for Portal Pro as well. It is obviously not an ideal solution, but there is an alternative method in the "tips" section of that page. I don't know how the two methods compare or even if the second one works.
