I mostly play games on my Xbox, but PC gaming has a special place in my heart (right next to where Half-Life and Medal of Honor sit, it's in the middle). Don't be afraid of talking to me, I am a headcrab, but I only bite sometimes, so you're pretty safe. I'm also known as littlejediowen, and Gunslinger on multiple sites.

Paranautical Activity

Game review

Paranautical Activity is like a perfect pairing of the two genres the description offers; roguelike and FPS. Even in its beta stage, it already is incredible fun, and suprisingly polished (in the time I played it, I didn't have a single bug, even on Windows 8). Its difficulty is on par with classic games like Doom, a combination of strategy and skill is needed to advance in the game. At the time of review, I haven't even gotten past the first boss (although, I did get close).

When you first click new game, you find yourself on a mysterious ship, with only a (random) weapon, and your skill, to fend off the ghouls and ghosts on the ship. Each map layout is randomly generated, which means that, although you'll see the same room "archtype" often, the order you see them in is different every time. Scattered throughout the levels are stores, which allow you to switch weapons and buy power-ups with the money you get from slain monsters. At the end of every level, somewhere in the map, is a boss fight, which is the only way to advance the level. These boss fights are pretty hard, and will require all the skill you aquired going through the level, along with a specific strategy for each boss.

All in all, even in its beta stage, Paranautical Activity offers smooth, fun action, for the low price of 6 dollars, to fans of shooters and roguelikes the same. And, with beta updates and the full game, I'm sure that the game will become even better than it is at the time of posting, so pick it up now, before the full price comes around (which I'd still recommend paying).
