You apparantly don't understand rouge-like games do you? It's never supposed to hold your hand, and you should never have a truly easy time.

There are also times where you'll start next to a nice shield and armor. It's all unforgiving luck, and it's tons of fun. When I cleared my first dungeon I was excited as all hell. I have died maybe 30 times or so, and have taken every death as a step towards learning. Like don't equip unidentified rings, make sure to either search the area with the S key, or be careful, etc.
