Nah, we have the engine source for Half-Life 1 now. The possibilities with our standalone version are infinite. We'll be sticking with it.
Port forwarding will work the same as it normally would for a Half-Life server. Typically, difficulties with port forwarding is down to the brand/model of router, and whether or not your ISP uses a firewall. I have had routers that refuse to acknowledge forwarded ports unless the computer was placed in the DMZ, and some routers simply need a few ports forwarded and it works instantly.
We'd like 5.0 to be Mac-ready, but it might not happen with the initial release of the standalone game on Steam. We're planning on ironing out the Linux version first, then getting a Mac version ready sometime later, which will be released via Steam's automatic content update servers.
We're are not considering this at the moment. With the standalone release, Sven Co-op is basically a brand new game, starting from scratch with a completely new player base. We're also still actively developing the game. We'd rather have a firm foundation of players and community content development before making a decision like this.
We have a bit of a running joke on the team that XP Mod only exists because we lack re-playable gameplay in many of the official maps. Instead of endorsing XP mod (which would be awful), we're just going to make the game more fun to play without server mods.
We'll be focusing on updating the gameplay for the initial Steam release.

Nice assumption, but that's not how we're going to force cooperative gameplay. More details will be posted later, once we make a reasonable amount of progress.
The Half-Life 1 campaign will be co-op only. A single player will not be able to play through it without multiple players.
Edit: Didn't realize that your comment was posted in March. The 4.8 installer has been updated to work with the Steampipe update, so this issue no longer exists.
