Creating diversity by using random events is a good idea but
it normally generates instability (Can you guarantee that every possible random event will work?). Sometimes some good planned extra missions to unlock at the end are easier to perform.
Well, it depends on what you've planned.
Changing weather and a day/night circle outside of battles would be nice and
it would make missions on the same map more entertaining.
I think a good transition between town/building areas and wilderness is important, too.
