Everything is coming together ?!

Welcome back!

This week we have a lot of new progress to share with you. First a look into a trial we had for an idea of a puzzle.


As you can see we still don´t have assets ready for the game, so we are using free assets and the inicial concept for our characters. You may also have noticed some bugs when it cames to pushing objects, in this case the box, we are currently working on fixing those, still is very exciting that we are at a stage where we can start seeing everything slowly coming together.

More on that topic we had some progress in the art department as well, you can see below some studies done on the elements we pretend to add in the background.

We also have been working on the art mokup, which just goes to show how we are trying to aproach this element of the project, you can see below the diferent aproaches we have tried so far.

This week we also had lots of changes on our level design, we are trying to have more of a progression through the order and elements of each puzzle. Below I will be sharing a sneak peak into how its looking right now.

Background, logo and code updates

This week we have a few more studies to share and also a sneak peak into the code we are using for some of our´s user interface elemnts.

Below you can see the code we are currently using to show the player the time they have remaining as a spirit , within this time the player must solve puzzles that cannot be accessed by the human character, save the human body if traped in a dandgerous situation and safely reenter the body, in case time runs out the game will restart from the last checkpoint.

The passing of this time will be represented in a circunfence witch also indicates the maximum radius from witch the body is still in the spirits reatch. As you can see below.

This week we also started making some inicial sketches and stuying concepts for the logo of the game. Keep in mind these are only our starting point and we have yet to finalize our logo.

Still in the art department ,some backgrounds are also being studied, below you can see how this studies are looking at the moment.

Concepts and Studies

First we would like to share the code we are currently using to pull the body while playing with the spirit, for this we use a SpringJoint2D and ajusted the physics of both bodies.

Apart from that we have some new art elements to share with you. First the final character design for the human character and the spirit, for this we took in considerations our audience´s preferences and also the main theme of the game, witch is voodoo.

Still in the art we also made some inicial environment elemnts such us some spikes, rocks and some water lilies. These elements of course can all be found in swamps, with is the environment we are trying to portray.

Another thing we spend time on this week was on level design, we designed several puzzles and put them together acording to their level of dificulty and order of introduction to the main mechanics. Below you can see a little part of this inicial design.

Studies and Concepts

This week we started studies for the main mechanics of our character in Unity, you can see how its looking below.

Here you can see how we intend to make our spirit control the body while dead. As this is still a very early stage in the creation of the game we dont´t have any in game art yet so we are using free sprites found online in order to save time and be more productive. This way we can start developing the game and everyone can work at the same time.

On that note we also would like the share the result of the inicial silhoutte concepts for our main character. Our artist made 15 concepts for silhouttes after a lot of research, since we had no idea how the character should look lIke in the beguining. Of course that to get thIS result we consulted with people from our target audience and discovered that this was the most picked.

Research

This week we started the research for theme, art and gameplay that we are trying to achieve, and assembled the following moodboards. As you can see our inspirations are from other games like Limbo and Faerie Afterlight, our theme and art style are inspired from the movie Princess and the frog , specialy it´s relations to voodoo and drawings from several artists.

This week we also focused a lot in planning. From planning meticulously every members time in hours to setting weekly milestones for all of the 19 weeks that we have for this project.

Iniciating Project

During the first week we discussed several ideas for the game, everyone had diferent ideas and things they would like to explore in this project , as you can imagine it took us a while before we landed on a solid idea that all of us agreed.However one of things we agreed since the beginning was that we should play with one of the most common mechanic in games which is taking damage, in most games this would only push you farther away from you objective. So we decided that we should invert that in our game, so that you have to stratigicly take damage in order to advance.This turned out to be the main mechanic for the game we aspire to make.

The idea we are aiming for now is making a puzzle platformer game , in which your character takes damage in order to release a spirit trapped in her that can help her solve puzzles and move forward in the map. This magical being has unique abilities such as flying and going through hard surfaces, these will help solve intricate chalenges found throughout the map.

This project consists in the creation of a 2D game, with this goal in mind a group was created.

My name is Diana Amaral and I am the game designer and project manager. Next we have Joana Marques, she is our artist. Last but not least we have Tomás Longo and he is our game developer.
