Powerpuff, hands down, but you shouldn't be using IPs!

(continuation of my previous post)
Then you say "Look there isn't a computer game for this IP, I'm not harming them." Even then you're missing the point, It's not your decision if that IP should exist in the medium or not, because it doesn't belong to you. IP's are tangable Starwars isn't just movies, games, books, merchandise... etc it's a concept that somebody owns. Lets say you want to make a Sonic fps. "Hey," you say ,"There isn't a Sonic fps game, wouldn't it be great if Sonic had a gun and ran around shooting people and collecting rings," (I won't ever be able to understand why this is an appealing idea to people) But sonic is somebodies idea, it's there choice if they want to ever make a sonic fps game or not. You might be violating there very principles, Example: if sonic's IP owners hate violence.
You have to understand that IP's are tangible. Yes you love them and you want to see more of them and you're not doing it out of spite or anything, but it's not your right to use it. Example: Lets say I love a painting and believe that it shouldn't hang in a museum, but instead it should be in my room. It's wrong to take it, because it's not mine and it belongs to somebody else. An Idea is just as real and as valuable as any painting hanging in a museum. It is that simple.

It's not our place to write the next chapter of a story it belongs to someone else and it wasn't you who created and put the work into it. You can try to justify it all you want, but really it's wrong to use someone else's IP. You're only denying the truth, we don't have the right.(Sorry this is so long but)

I hate Copy right Law, but don't misunderstand me. I hate that it needs to exists and not what it protects. The notion that someone's ideas need to be protected and people can't just respect them makes me mad. Let me try to justify why you shouldn't mess with peoples IPs.

If you think giving credit is all it takes to make things fine then try that next time you take a test or a quiz (since most of us are high school or university people) cheat off the person next to you but then right down that you got the answers from them. You could even be creative and reword a few answers. Try turning it in like that. OK, ludicrous I know, but in a case like cheating on a test you're getting all the benefits of having the answers with out doing any real work. It's like using a good IP you get characters or an environment that people want to see, but you didn't do any of the work in creating those.

People make money from IP's, and do you thing companies that own them care about you being creative with their stuff? It's about money. If you make a starwars mod for hl2 and lets pretend it's good and free, people might play your mod instead of something that lucasarts put out and by doing so it prevents them from making money. Ok, well now in reality, you make a starwars mod for hl2 and it sucks, people play it hate it and swear to never play a starwars computer game and again (sounds weird but there is such a thing as bad publicity). Either way you're harming Lucasarts and they're going to benefit from stopping you. (to be continued)

I'll agree that modding has become easier with better tools, but I'll disagree that it out ways the huge difficulties created by the requirements of having better looking content. A 500 polygon character model with a 512x512 texture just doesn't cut it anymore(unless we're talking about rts games :P)

Yeah, someone who just wants to write a very simple mutators is probably going to be fine with this, but I figure knowing about object oriented programing can't hurt.

A very good little intro to programing, but for those who have no programing experience this probably goes to quickly over the material. Epic has a link to Orangesmoothie.org from their "modgettingstarted" page. It should give beginners a better understanding of the concepts of classes and such.

Fell - - 41 comments @ Mods fail to release because

Probably a mix of all three, but from my experience the biggest factor is when real life catches up with you. Mod teams depend on members being motivated, and when work is getting done and there are results you become more motivated, but as progress slows, because of real life stuff, that motivation goes out the window. Sure, modding is hard work, and that kills off plenty of mods, but not the teams with 20+ members who work on promising mods.

UE3, looks like it's going to have better tools and easier to modify really you're not going to need much more then that.

There's nothing better then in your face one on one gun fights. It's no acomplishment to win when some one has your back every second and you're picking off the enemy one at a time. It's far better to hunt down the enemy alone, it gets the adrenaline flowing faster then when you're playing it safe and boring.

From a modding perspective, it's Unreal all the way, but I'm probably more excited about actually playing bioshock. It's going to be a fantastic year for us all.

Personally I don't think he looks like the prince, but the model does share some symilarities with that old hl dbz mod, and since the site is at dbzhood, (it's just a crazy guess) but i'm guessing there's some kinda connection. I also think of someone else when I hear "Nameless one" you guys may not be old enough to remember planescape torment. It'd be a good thing for this mod to look into the idea of using normal maps.

I guess so, but what's written in paper? Would the actual map (not talking about the hl2 story or charachters) be your IP because you designed it, or their's because you're using their resources?

I think valve feels obligated to the community to just let us use their IP. even when they dont like some of the stuff that's being done with it, and i have no idea why. It justs makes me wonder what the limmit is, to what point does editing a game becomes an IP infringement. Is making a level in the hl2 universe for hl2 technicly legal, or just allowed?

Fell - - 41 comments @ Should modders use others' IP without permission?

Valve is different then most game developers because they hold the rights to all there own stuff, and are so supportive of the mod community. codename gordon as an example, they'd probably just think that it would be really cool if someone made a rts hl2 game and distributed it for free.

It's not true at all that there are very few original ideas left. it's only our way of thinking where we tend to only think along the lines of things that have been done before. Nothing is really 100% original and what we considered "original" is just a compilation of things that have already been done. It's that twisting and pulling and bringing in new ideas that does make it original. Starwars is just flashgorden/king arther/nazis/foundations/metropolis/easternphilosophy/ and who knows what else. The more things you mix the more original it becomes and our society values originality above all else in stories/movies/games. Saying it's hard to come up with an original idea and having that be the reason you make anouther cs mod is just not a good excuse.

The fundamental problem with Halogen ( I believe) was that it was going to be a mod for Generals, if it had been designed for Halo Pc microsoft might not have had such an issue, but the fact people would probably buy Generals so they could play Halogen does involve money even if it wouldn't go to the people who made the mod. That being said mods should be original, because when they are based on allready exsisting things they have to bend to the rules of that story and there just isn't any originality. Originality is the one thing that mods can do better then the industy and giving that up just makes me wonder why anyone would make the mod or play it then in the first place?
