Hey, I'm Clemens, or just eugde for the folks on the internet. I've been intrested in Indie games and mods for a long time, I think at least since I was seven or eight years old. I'm living in Austria, Lower Austria, to be specific. I spend most of the time on my computer gaming, programming, in the internet or trying to figure out new things in Blender. If I'm not on the computer, I'm playing the guitar or snowboarding or doing on of at least a thousand other things. I have decent knowledge of C++, Python and UnrealScript and I know my way around Blender. At the moment I'm trying to get the hang of the UDK. If anyone would be interested in working on something together with me, feel free to contact me.

Minecraft

Game review

Minecraft was the biggest surprise that I got in 2010 in terms of gaming. It is something so completely and utterly different from most of the other games, so it's really difficult to compare it or give it a rating.

I remember, one time, when I played it during a break in school, and some of my classmates gathered around my laptop. Everyone except one of them, who already had heard about the game, started saying "It looks so ******!" or "Even my phone has got better graphics!". But after the next lesson, they all were standing around my desk again and about a week later, 3 of them had already bought it themselves.

There is some kind of special appeal to Minecraft, and I don't think that any words are able to do justice to this great piece of gaming art. That also is the reason why, at the time of me writing this review, it is getting close to 1 000 000 sales and the Creeper has nearly become a pop culture symbol.

Nevertheless there are some negative things to say about it:

The first time you start playing it, you are kind of lost. I was lucky because I got to watch some videos on youtube before I started playing it, but without them, I think I wouldn't even have had the least idea what I should do.
One could argue that getting to figure out how to survive completely on your own is one of the most important things about Minecraft. Altough I agree to this, it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to at least give a newbie a gentle nudge in the right direction.

Of course there are lots of bugs and unfinished features in the game (at the moment, Beta 1.1_02 if I am correct), but I think it's just a matter of time until these get fixed.

To come to an end, I think Minecraft is a great example for how indie games can reach a greater audience just by oral propaganda. Thanks to notch and all the people from Mojang Specifications for this great game. Besides the Humble Gaming Bundle 2 I think buying minecraft is the best money I spent on gaming this year.
