GameMaker:Studio is very easy to both learn and use. It's how I started programming and I still use it today.
I think that most people underestimate it from what I have read from other reviews, but I think it's great.
It has a good layout, and a very easy programming language.
GameMaker might not seem like a powerful engine, and to tell the truth, it's not, at least not at first, but there is a thing called the YoYo Compiler, which uses C++ to compile the game, which will make it up to a hundred times faster when needed.
I really recommend this engine for making great 2-Dimentional games.
