Unfortunately, it's still in flux so it's hard to tell the final system requirements. You obviously meet the minimum ones to technically run it.
Things to try:
Set the graphics quality to "low". The game won't look as good, but should run much better graphics-wise.
Press F2 to pause game logic updates. That'll stop water/lava simulation that takes a lot of CPU time. If it removes lag, your CPU is likely too slow. If not, video card is an issue.
I suspect it might have performance issues with integrated Intel graphics, but I can't test that for now.
The world size is limited by water/lava simulation mostly. I might optimize it for multiple core CPUs later and double the world size.

Update 0.17 is awaiting authorization on Desura now, should be available in a few days.
It has very basic story mode with universe map and saved games, but no real story features yet.
In the next update (it'll be on Desura in a few days) you can cast "Use Portal" on your castle to go back to the universe map.
You can enable cross-hair in options, it helps with aiming a bit. And stronger spells will be auto-guided to some degree.
You can double-tap forward or backward to dash, like that spell in Magic Carpet.
It's possible to avoid wyverns, but it takes some practice, and it's harder the more of them are around.
I'm adding universe map and partial save/load now.
The demo has 10 spells now, and the alpha 5 more.
I've uploaded 0.16 to Desura yesterday, but it's still pending approval. They manually check each download to avoid viruses and crashing games, and that takes time.
Yes, Volcano is a powerful spell, it needs quite a bit of mana. I'll change mana cheat in next updates to lift the maximum mana as well.

More spells currently (both initial and those you can find in the world). The difference between full game and the demo will get larger as the game is developed, especially when story mode will be added.

I'm going to improve flight, several people complained about it too. Adding character shadow is easy, but I don't like to define the character more.

You just cast thunderstorm like other spells. It needs a lot of mana though, you'll need to expand your mana pool first by killing monsters or getting some mana from magic circles if you're lucky.
