Description

A "flame of remembrance" was lit there for the first time on November 11, 1923, a century ago. This eternal flame is, together with that of the "altar of the Motherland" in Rome, the first of its kind since the extinction of the "flame of the Vestals" in 391.
It commemorates the memory of soldiers who died in battle and never goes out: it is revived every evening at 18:30 by associations of veterans or war victims. This ceremonial even took place during the Second World War, despite the German military occupation.
