Sure. Any programming experience will help you transition into UnrealScript. You just need to take the time to learn it.

I'll speak for myself here...I personally am self-taught. I taught myself C/C++ starting in 6th grade and I really got into programming in high school.

To be honest, UDK makes things very easy. It's a great engine and UnrealScript is pretty simple to learn. Just follow a couple tutorials, read up on the UDN and just mess around with stuff and you'll be good to go. (http://www.udk.com).
