Ahh love your Frank character lol. For some reason it reminds me of Leisure Suit Larry.
Yeah Unity's terrain is nice to play with but ultimately it's still quite taxing on your FPS, and forget mobile-use with it. What you can do is create your terrain in Unity the way you want. Test it with your character and gameplay. Then use a plugin (cant remember name) to export the unity terrain as a height map into your 3D program. Then...lower the polys and export it as a mesh into Unity.
You could always go voxel, too.

Cheers for the comment! I've been playing around with low mesh models recently and they are much better performance wise, and as you have said, can be used on mobile devices. Just trying to balance user created and procedurally generated islands... (recently created a game for PROCJAM 2014 which will inspire how the water and some of the terrain will be created for this game - 8bitape.net)
