Console Modders
1 member Hardware & TechWe're all about console modding on PlayStation and Xbox.
Welcome to Console Modders! We're all about modding PlayStation and Xbox for as much fun as possible. Our main focus is PS4, which is the most used game console in 2019.
The heart of the PS4 is an AMD combo processor with an eight-core Jaguar CPU and a modern DirectX 11.1 GPU. The latter uses a redesigned GCN architecture and has 1152 shader cores that theoretically pack 1.843 trillion calculations per second at 800 MHz. The pure graphics performance would thus be approximately at the level of current 150-euro graphics cards. But Sony or AMD has turned on certain screws and wants to raise the gaming performance of the PS4 to a higher level.
For example, the PS4 offers unified memory - meaning that the CPU and GPU can share 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. Its transfer rate of 176 GB / s (256 bit, 2750 MHz) is sufficient for native rendering in Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels). For Cerny, GDDR5 memory was the first choice to prevent memory bandwidth as a typical bottleneck when using high-resolution textures. Alternatively, according to Cerny, only 128 data lines could be used in conjunction with an additional, extremely fast eDRAM for the framebuffer; that would be easier to produce, but would have increased developer programming effort.
