Description

VR Fire Escape is an immersive virtual reality adventure game where the player must rescue his pet guinea pigs from a burning house. This game uses spatial audio and is best enjoyed using headphones.

History

The creation of VR Fire Escape was driven by two factors: first, I needed to develop a capstone project to get my Udacity VR certificate and I wanted to take my time doing it to show off my UI and development skills: second, for the last two years, my full-time job involved working with the SC Fire Academy and I thought it would be an interesting challenge to try to incorporate fire special effects into a Cardboard game.

In Die Hard, there's an elevator shaft scene where a fireball almost engulfs Kevin Costner's character. So I thought, wouldn't it be cool to recreate at least some of this in the game? And off I went, spending a lot of time looking at elevator models online (because my Blender modeling skills are not that advanced yet).

It turned out that the big challenge was to integrate the elevator into the mesh of a house. I went through multiple iterations of the house mesh until finally I found something that looked good but was at the same time not too complex to slow down the entire application to a crawl.

The game does end up having a modest-sized fireball and a moving flame that threatens one of the guinea pigs the player is supposed to rescue. I thought about smoke effects, too, but was afraid that I would push the iPhone to the limit and the game would start to freeze.

After over four months of after-hours development, I am pleased with the end result. The spatial audio is a nice touch and the baked textures are looking better than I expected.

This is my first game and I hope there will be many more to come. Enjoy!
