Introducing two core concepts behind the space sim Stellar Warp: Six degrees of freedom and zero gravity mechanics.

Six degrees of freedom - pitch yaw and roll - is one of the components often neglected in space sims and a core feature of Stellar Warp.

wikipedia wrote: Six degrees of freedom (6DoF) refers to the freedom of movement of a rigid body in three-dimensional space. Specifically, the body is free to move forward/backward, up/down, left/right (translation in three perpendicular axes) combined with rotation about three perpendicular axes, often termed pitch, yaw, and roll.

The following figure visualizes the concept:

Stellar Warp is using real physics to simulate the behavior of spacecraft in zero gravity space. The following animation shows the current implementation of the 6DoF concept.

Further when there is no gravity and no friction, once you apply a force (such as activate a spaceship engine), you will keep moving in the direction of the applied force until you apply force in the opposite direction. The rotation of the spaceship is completely independent from the direction the spaceship is headed. The following animation shows a multiplayer fly-by test.

The player will have to watch his directional and angular velocity. Fuel is required to both accelerate and slow down, so thinking ahead is required. If you miscalculate your fuel, or try to get somewhere too fast and run out of fuel to accelerate, you will have to deal with the consequences: most likely death.
