Rogue's Tale is a single player turn-based dungeon crawling game. The game takes place in a place called Frostmourn Keep and its underlying dungeons located in the World's End Mountains. The goal is to overthrow the current king of the Frostmourn Keep and become the new king. A demo version and game guide can be found on the homepage. Key features: - Classless character building where you can choose to be the kind of rogue you want. - Seemingly unfair, untimely and unforgiving deaths which are also permanent. - Ways to counter these deaths by learning the game mechanics. - Random dungeons and encounters. - 24 talents to build your character with. - 30 spells to build your character even further. - 30 heritages that make your next character stronger. - 30 challenges to complete once you get the hang of the game.

How many levels are in Frostmourn Keep?Do developer have plans for some expansions, add-ons or something? It seems that Rogue's Tale don't have so much content for its price (comparing with other roguelike titles).

Apr 21 2013 Anchor

Each dungeon has 2-6 levels and you can reset a dungeon for as many times as you want until you feel that you are ready to face the king. You can always download the demo from the homesite and see if it has enough content or not.

Apr 21 2013 Anchor

Thanks for a reply. I'm going to download the demo. I like the visual style of your game very much and I am pondering about purchase :)
But you didn't answer about expansions plans?

Well, as I understand, I should download the Launcher. I did. But I can't realize if I must be online while I play or for dungeons be formed? And I couldn't find out what is the difference between demo and full version?
Sorry for idiotic questions :) It's just because English is not my native language :)

Once the launcher has downloaded the client and installed it, just create an offline profile in-game and you're good to go.

As for the difference: "The difference is that the level cap is 20 instead of 10, you can learn 6 talents instead of 3 and the game becomes harder at around level 12 when the enemies learn new talents (demo is kind of an easy mode). In addition, some challenges are either almost impossible or impossible to complete in the demo."

As for expansion plans, perhaps when more than 0.3% of players have taken down the king =)

OK. By the way, don't you plan also to change the music? I feel that Space Empires V music is not quite fit in Rogue's Tale, is it? ;)

Apr 22 2013 Anchor

Or maybe the music is not quite fit for Space Empires V =)

They are licensed sounds and might be in a hundred different games. I just picked the ones that somehow fit in this one and I don't have any plans to change them. You can always set the music volume to 0 in the options if they feel out of place.

Apr 22 2013 Anchor

Well, I don't mean sounds, I mean the main menu theme. I don't think it might be "in a hundred different games", 'cause it was in SEV only.

All the music in this game comes from PartnersInRhyme (as well as most of the sound effects). It is possible that the same music is used in games, commercials, tv-shows, whatever. I have no idea if SEV uses them, but if they do, then they have probably licensed the music from PIR as well.

This game is super frustrating. My top 50 scores range from 2290 to 220. I've probably played at least another 50 games beyond that, many ending with 0 score. (My record is death in two turns.) I have not unlocked a single heritage or challenge (or even come close). All my fights are fights to the death (even if I get lucky enough to have enemies fight each other) since I haven't discovered whether they can be otherwise. I don't feel like I can ever "get ahead." I feel like I'm doomed every game.

I'm discovering things here and there, but the rewards have been small. My best scores come when I find some item that is very useful or very expensive that I can sell. There have to be some things I'm overlooking, some skill or mechanic I've yet to learn, because a game like this can't be this much based on chance...can it?

(All this and I still keep coming back...)

Start with AGI+STA8, stab a snail, raise AGI to 9. If you see a ranged or caster enemy, stay as far as possible until the enemy has spent its arrows/energy (also hide behind walls so that the enemy must move next to you). Then move in for the kill. If you find a shield, use it with a small weapon such as your dagger. If you find a medium weapon, use only it. Train either Heroic Charge or Blade Flurry depending if you find a fireplace or training dummy. If the first items you find are bow and arrows, use them and swap to a melee weapon when the enemy is close (or jump away by pressing Q). In this case learn either Dark Vision or Steady Shot. Remember to use whatever talents you learn and you will reach level 10-12 pretty fast. After that some orc will kill you and you will have to learn new tricks but at least you can unlock your first heritage.

Pro tip: press G, type "/search 3" without the quotes and press S before every move. This will give you a lot of experience and lack of STR won't kill you because you can disarm the traps before you step in them. This is not always a good idea but if your problem is that you get stuck in traps then it's worth the extra caution.

Yeah, I needed to focus on two stats instead of three. With some other luck, I'm now playing a character at level 11!

I learned the jumping trick by watching your trailer video yesterday. It has come in handy!

Thanks for the tip about searching. Does that spend three turns search per 'S' or does it search a larger radius? [EDIT] Ah, retries.

With regards to cursed items increasing critical failure modifier, is that just for related actions (cursed weapons/armour damaged easier) or is it a global effect (a cursed helm making weapon breaks more likely for instance)?

May 1 2013 Anchor

It is a global effect that affects every action and dice roll you make. If you wear one cursed item your actions critically fail (and items break) three times more likely than normal. Two cursed items and its six times more likely.

Thanks,

After boning up on the mechanics, I'm getting pretty far into the dungeon most of the time, but still get torn a new one by archers and casters, irrespective of build (and yes, I'm always packing a +2 min block shield).

Are distance (ranged modifier) and min block on shield (deflection modifier) the only things that increase miss rates? With dodge/block being exclusively melee? It seems no amount of AGI helps so I'm guessing the former.

May 2 2013 Anchor

Your guess is right and it works exactly like that.

How many accounts may I create via my Desura copy of this game? It appears I have forgotten my login...luckily this one was fairly new so starting over won't be an issue just wondering if there are any account creation issues in play.

May 17 2013 Anchor

As many as you like.

May 19 2013 Anchor

Hmm... it says in ring of evasion's desc that "this effect does not stack" so does it mean it wont stack even with ring of deflection, or just with 2 rings of evasion?

May 19 2013 Anchor

With 2 rings of evasion.

May 22 2013 Anchor

ok, thanks.. anyone know if there is any way to mark/recognise your minions, like undead? i had a bunch once, but when fighting random undead, it became a big chaos =D

When is the next patch coming, any news? =)

Jun 4 2013 Anchor

It apparently got released already but the version that the Desura client runs might not work in some cases. See this thread:

  • quote from epixx, the rule of three
Before reaching level 20 a human's lowest and highest ability may not differ by more than three. The last ability point gained at level 20 may be used without this limitation.

this does mean base ability? but if i have all base abilities at 7, can i raise some ability to 10 before lvl 20?

Jun 4 2013 Anchor

If every ability is at least 7, you can increase an ability up to 10, which is the cap. For the skill point gained at level 20 however, you may increase this stat to 11. At level 17, you may have stats at 7/7/10/10

How does one go about taming a cave bear?
