Robot Commander is a 2D multiplayer real time action-oriented online strategy and tactics game. Like classical board games (Chess or Go), it is meant to be played against other human opponents. Your playing strength is ELO rated.
The main idea of Robot Commander is to put you in control of a growing bunch of small battle robots. Each robot follows simple move, repair, and attack commands. Your job is to take over all robots of your opponents inside the battle arena. But you, the robot commander, can only see what your little robots see... so the maze-like arena quickly become a deep and dark forest and the path out is only wide enough for one ;-)
Eight players with up to 250(!) robots can compete in a single arena battle against each other. It is up to you to come up with ideas to outwit your opponents.
On the title screen of Robot Commander you can create your commander's account name and password. By clicking the 'Connect' button you enter the player's lobby.
The picture below shows the lobby area from where you can chose to enter the next arena game. On the left, an "Online" list shows all players currently connected to the server. The "Arena" list indicates when the next game is going to start and who has already signed up for it! Hit that "Join" button to be part of it! You can enter a battle arena all by yourself to practice a bit but for a real game there should at least join two players.
To issue a MOVE command to a robot, simply hover the mouse over a robot, hold down the LEFT mouse button and draw a green arrow to the desired destination. In just the same manner you can issue a REPAIR command using the MIDDLE mouse button (brown arrows). The destination of a REPAIR command needs to be a damaged robot. Use the RIGHT mouse button to issue an ATTACK command (red arrows). Below you can see the robot's blaster in action. You can link robots together to form a chain by issuing a MOVE command with another robot as destination (blue arrows). Any command can be canceled by clicking on the robot using the corresponding mouse button.
As a secondary weapon, each robot has the ability to cast a one-time electrostatic discharge causing heavy damage to surrounding robots of your opponents. The discharge is initiated by hitting the SPACE bar. It cannot be recharged again, so use it only when needed.
Only the small part of the arena is visible that corresponds to the visible field of the robot currently selected. To change the viewing perspective to another robot, hover the mouse over the robot and press the MIDDLE mouse button.
By using the mouse scroll wheel the display changes to a radar-like map view of your robots (see below on the right hand side). Each of your robots is drawn with a specific color indicating it's current command status: white = IDLE, green = MOVING, blue = FOLLOWING, red = ATTACKING, brown = REPAIRING. Clicking on any robot symbol in the map view changes your viewing perspective to that robot.
