History

Regency Solitaire is a card game about doing up a ballroom and falling in love that has arguably been a success story for Grey Alien Games - an indie microstudio based in Southwest England.

Card games feature heavily in Regency romance novels just as they did in Georgian life, and they were played frequently in social settings. Also losing your fortune or gambling your daughter’s hand in marriage were common plot devices. It made perfect sense to combine a card game with a tale about amassing a fortune and rebuilding a tarnished reputation set in the early 1800s.

The team brought together experience of creating polished, casual card games with research into Regency history to make the setting, clothing and items in the game as authentic as possible. We wanted players to feel they had dropped in to the Regency period for just one more hand of cards.

The project was supported by Creative England’s GamesLab South West programme.
