Managing a project can sometimes be hard when the team is in different locations so in this post I will let you in on the tools we have been using to handle everything.
Subversion
To make sure our code and assets are always up to date and there are no conflicts we have been using Subverison which is a very powerful tool for managing version changes and recovering from any changes that could lead to corrupted files. It also provides us a way to access the code from any machine.We have set up Subversion on a cheap Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 lts) dedicated server from Kimsufi this gives us 1TB of storage space and 5TB of traffic each month at a reasonable 100Mbps, The best part about doing it this was is we keep our costs low which is important for any hobbyist / indie game team.
Google Docs
As most people now have a google account whether it is for GMail, YouTube, Android or any other service our search engine overlords provide us.Google Docs is brilliant if you want to set up a word style document that multiple people can edit and everyone else can see the changes as they happen, This also allows us to access the documents on the move to add any ideas we have while out and about during our normal day lives.
Skype
A lot of people use Skype and we have been using it as part of our development process to communicate with each other if we are around at the time through voice or text, It is one of the best VOIP clients out there and allows quick sending of files from the art team during the design stages so that we can suggest any changes that might need to be made.
WordPress
As you may have noticed we are indeed using WordPress to manage the blog and will also be using it for the main site once the design is completed. Although I am not the biggest fan of WordPress it is a very flexible platform and creating custom plug ins or even installing new existing ones is very quick and easy and it allows you to make your site how you want it and you don’t have to keep it like everyone else’s.
