Buy an expensive real rocket, optimize the payload to the last gram, and send it to the Moon or March. There, build a small base where your astronauts will live for months underground in the narrow space of the base, shielding from radiations, and trying to keep their sanity. This is the adventure mankind will go for in the next years and decades, and Outer Space Shack will let you play it from the comfort of Planet Earth.

Outside refuges and regolith tile paths on the Moon

Posted by on

Outer Space Shack was released on Steam in July 2023. Release 1.4 of the game was launched on February 28th. Here are the key highlights.

Outside Refuge

The base's terrain spans about 1 square kilometer on the rugged lunar surface, where traveling from one point to another can take up to 15 minutes one way. This significantly reduces the effective work period, limited by the space suit's cooling capacity and the astronaut's stamina since working in a pressure suit is extremely exhausting. Enter the outdoor refuge: a shelter from the intense solar rays, equipped with a chair for resting, water, a CO2 scrubber, and oxygen to replenish the space suit's reserves. This refuge also features a low-speed charger for the rover, providing assistance in emergencies.

Regolith tiles

Walking on the lunar surface is challenging: the sand-like regolith can bog you down, and the landscape is littered with razor-sharp rocks due to the lack of atmospheric erosion.

This is where regolith tiles come in. Made in the solar kiln, these tiles let you create pathways around your space base, facilitating quicker and more efficient movement for astronauts and vehicles alike. Vehicles can travel up to three times faster on these tiles, conserving battery power in the process.

However, with the solar kiln being essential for both radiation shielding and tile production, the initial regolith yield isn't enough. That's why Release 1.4 introduces an upgraded solar kiln. This new version not only harnesses solar power but can also utilize excess heat and electricity from the base, tripling the production speed of blocks and tiles.

Other Release 1.4 improvements

Release 1.4 has improved pathfinding in Outer Space Shack, making vehicles now pick tile paths when available. It was a complex task, adding asynchronous features and varying details to make pathfinding smoother and more intuitive for players.

We've also enhanced radiation management to more accurately reflect real lunar conditions, with increased radiation during the day and decreased at night, mimicking the natural solar to cosmic radiation balance.

Additionally, over 20 bug fixes have been implemented, concentrating on enhancing the game's performance and stability.
