the newest edition. they point to your spawn point at all times (even in chests). mine is a wooden shrine.

or another idea... make it so it point to a certain redstone torch, so you can always find your way back home
like, right click compass on torch, it points to it :D
btw are those sticks (bars) of wood, made from fences, or something new?

I suck at minecraft.
Eh, find a mountain, hollow it out into a decent looking castle, and then use the excess resources to build up an exterior. It makes for a really nice looking place and you can then build a city around it.
it never hurts to sketch out a basic plan in MS paint.
