Description
Gravitus Minus is a tribute and a remake of Thrust, an 8-bit video game originally published in 1986 and to the spiritual successors such as Oids and Solar Jetman. Instead of just replicating the source material, Gravitus Minus takes the basic idea, adds its own layer of retro aesthetics and attempts to give the current generation the same challenge as the original games did.
History
Gravitus was originally started as a remake project in the late 2000s. There were excellent remakes of Thrust already (and nothing stops anyone from playing the original game on an emulator) but it was felt that the game and the whole genre needed a proper love letter.
It was felt that to keep in spirit of the early days of the game industry, the plan was to create all tools from scratch instead of just using an existing framework. In addition, only open source software was used when not using the proprietary editors.
While this slowed down the actual game development time, there were benefits: the music sequencer (Klystrack) was originally going to be just a simple tool for the game project. The sequencer was eventually used not only to create the game music and sound effects but also to create original music for fun and for other projects and it continues as its own project, perhaps even overshadowing the game it was made for!
Finally, in 2016, the game was released as "Gravitus Minus".
