Goblin Camp is a roguelike city builder, inspired by Anno 1404, Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Keeper.

Post news Report RSS Version 0.13 released

A new version is out, lots of changes and new features

Posted by on

Version 0.13 brings with it a lot of improvements. The first thing you’ll notice is the completely redone map generation. I’ve written a short changelog below, and even though it doesn’t include all the bug fixes and small tweaks it should give a pretty good idea of the changes.

I’d really like to thank everyone who have donated, it really means a lot. Also I want to thank everyone who have contributed code, Goblin Camp wouldn’t be in this good a state if it was just me.

Changelog:

  • Implemented heightmap based map generation for more interesting maps
  • Containers generalized
  • Stockpiles have container-specific limits
  • Ants can tunnel through walls
  • Gameover is registered when all your orcs+goblins are dead
  • Assigning orders to a squad now flashes a marker on thr map to better visualize it
  • Added patrol orders
  • Fixed escort orders, and renamed it to ‘Follow’
  • You can now define what an npc becomes on death (corpse, small corpse, just filth, etc.)
  • Stockpiles and farmplots can be expanded after being built
  • Pontoon bridges
  • Health bar for npcs in the sidebar
  • NPC’s will eat each other if starving (starting with the weakest npc they see)
  • Ground will get muddy if walked over constantly
  • Duckboards can be built over mud to allow faster travel
  • Orcs and goblins spread filth
  • The spawning pool will grow organically while spreading corruption the more filth and corpses you dump into it
  • Items have bulk, and heavier items will slow npcs down more than lighter ones will
  • Reworked npc stats and food numbers (spreadsheets ahoy)
  • Added tooltips to menus to explain different constructions
  • Added camp tiers: At first only the most basic constructions are available, and only weak monsters will attack. As you advance through tiers more options become available, and tougher monsters appear.
  • Tile requirements for constructions, now stone quarries can only be built on stone for example.
  • If a place is left to itself plants will grow back and peaceful woodland creatures will return
  • Goblins no longer stockpile things neatly into rows
  • Felling trees and digging ditches requires tools
  • Added a totem pole which centers the camp
  • Added a tutorial to help out newcomers and show how to use python for mods

Dwarf Fortress is way to inaccesable for most people, Bay 12 games is way to attached to their crappy interface. This game at least tries to have a decent mouse based ui and it looks pretty good so far!

I have no issue what so ever playing dwarf fortress, but i guess i can understand it being difficult for people who are just afraid of interacting with a undeveloped interface that dwarf fortress has.

From what i understand the interface for dwarf fortress is going to be one of the last things that are going to be worked on.

Again, ill stick with dwarf fortress.

that seems pretty passive aggressive and elitist of you to say that people like me are "afraid" of learning a how to use a broken, ****** user interface. It's like saying "purified water is the best, I guess I can understand people who are too lazy to purify their water the right way and just use those water filters, but I have no problem boiling my water for 6 hours before I drink it!"

I dont remember saying anything negative like "lazy" towards those who dont want to try Dwarf Fortress out because of its lack of a interface. When I first saw dwarf fortress it was overwhelming to attempt to learn how to play because of its lack of a interface.

I also wouldnt say the interface is broken, its very usable. It is on the other hand pretty ******, i agree with you there. It isnt elitist of me to say that people who see the interface would be afraid of it
though... because it is true! Its difficult and can seem overwhelming. I am also diffidently not saying this is the case for everyone, some people dont wish to go through that big of a learning curve in an attempt to learn to play a game. I am not going to say every single reason why people dont want to play an undeveloped game lacking a interface. Its just preference.

I do hope that Dwarf Fortress will have a interface similar to this one day, that will be sweet.

I like the mouse designation, which DF already does(and this video makes me realize I should use more), but the Goblin specialized stuff like the spawning pool and corruption are really cool, so is the invaders breaking down walls (why ants?). Also the mouse-over names are nice. The water seems to flow incredibly fast though.

This seems really specialized on one aspect, unlike DF, I'm not sure who your target audience is though, most people who can't get by DF's "user unfriendly" controls can't get by its default graphics either. (see l0p's comment)

I'll check it out, but why should I play this instead of DF?

hey i'm a big fan of what your doing! i only discovered dwarf fortress not long ago and i loved it, and i wanted to know if there is a similar game with a different race, so i found goblin fortress. the interface is also much improved. the graphics look great! if your like me you can appreciate the visuals. this style also allows players to use their imagination. dont be discouraged by people like l0p, he is a 13 year old who has grown up with call of duty and halo. there will be people that need graphics but im sure you new that when you started development.
