Empire in the Sky is an independently developed PC video game set in a stylized 1960s-1980s retro cartoon universe with blatant and extensive references to NASA and other "Space Race" icons. Much of the data is modeled after real life, so you might even learn something! This is the "lava lamp" of space RPG shooters! Travel the cosmos in a fully customizable spacecraft -- designed by you (or us). Fight or befriend scores of alien civilizations in your quest to rule the cosmos, while exploring a rich, procedurally generated world that includes planets, planetary bases, towns, cities and starbases. Build a nearly limitless and vast empire that stretches across hundreds of star systems, on thousands of planets! Empire in the Sky optionally lets you build your own starbases and planetary bases, and enhance your designs by crafting individual spacecraft parts.

So what are we looking at here? Is this a space station under construction? Also, what is the grid behind the geometric shapes? Will the shapes be textured - if so, will texture be procedural, modifiable, or standard?
The picture above shows a small space station being constructed as seen in the videos. The grid behind the components is the "struts" on which custom starbase components can be attached.
Originally we planned an entire system for developing materials, but instead went with this look and feel of "cartoon" for various performance and scheduling reasons. Because the game is so broad (involves interiors, planet surfaces, dungeons) we are stretched pretty thin with basically 1 visual artist up to this point who is also the developer. In a sequel, should there be one, or if we sell more than 100000 copies, we will fully develop that system because we feel it fits perfectly with what we're aiming for.
