Cubelands has moved from a private beta to a public beta. We removed the beta key requirement so everyone is welcome to play the game. IndieDB is the first site we're announcing the public beta at! Be among the first new users :)!
There has been quite some news lately, but I didn't want to spam IndieDB with bugfixes and other small improvements. So here is a summary of the most important changes since the last IndieDB newspost.
Fully customizable worlds (multiplayered)
You can change the terrain textures very easily, this is streamed from servers to clients. This enables themed worlds. The possibilities are endless; Recreate a factory, the desert, Alaska, Heaven, Egypt, Mars etc... As you can expect from Cubelands, customizing the textures is very easy, there's no need to make your own texture atlas etc. See the tutorial forum for details.
I look forward to see the first customizations!
Shadows + Fully customizable sun cycle
You can change the suns rotation, whether it rotates at all, the Ambient light color and more.
Other improvements
There have been various other improvements:
- Easy importing/exporting
- A game patcher
- New chat commands
- Great performance improvements
- New community features on the website
- An online character viewer
- Never play alone! New quickplay function to easily connect to a random server.
- Many small bugfixes/improvements
OMg! Sweeeeeeet! :D
Tech looks nice but it's a total rip off minecraft, even the trees look almost identical. This project won't last long before you guys get sued by them.
Sorry but i don't support games which copy other peoples ideas it's just wrong.
Don't support Minecraft then because it is an Infiniminer rip-off...
-snip-
Notch.tumblr.com - Sapienti sat.
If they copied Minecraft at least they should not reverse the controls!
Not really a total rip off... it's like NetHack is to Rogue
it's actually a rip off of sauerbraten
even if it's kinda a ripoff from minecraft, it looks better (it still has the nice blocky graphics, but with much better textures), it uses unity, which is much smoother and more stable for games than working with java
it has no random generated levels, its just a multiplayer sandbox, but its pretty nice
since it's free, they also can't be sued for riping off minecraft
Minecraft already exists. No point in making another clone.
Just for the heck of it, I am going to point out the stuff you guys aren't getting...
This may be based off of Minecraft or Infiniminer, but there are a LOT of games like this. Cube 2/Saugerbrauten is one of them, and so on.
Zachtronics made the original concept for the new sandbox block games, and I think you guys should respect that.
There is this game called minecraft, have you guys ever heard of it?
whats different from all the copycat games of this style already? why play this one??
It's the unprecedented success of Minecraft that's bringing it on. Nothing wrong with that of course, or we wouldn't have Half-Life or Bioshock etc.
Well, I went to my cousin's house this weekend and played cubelands with him (which has already played like 100 hours there ._.) and we had lots of fun, the game is excellent, but we think that you should remove the sun cycle, it got kinda... bad.
Run a dedicated server and edit/disable the sun settings. You can set this up in minutes
oh no! another copy of minecraft!!
