I remember you guys said a block in the opposite direction of a slice is treated as if it's not there, but with the forward block, does that mean that it will never be able to have that happen to it?

Correct. Forward block is usually the safest, but you still take half damage from both left and right attacks. This can still be fatal, especially if you don't take advantage of side blocks for parrying.
