When I was about 5 years old my father bought an Atari 2600. It was a hard clunky plastic block with really horrible controllers. I remember my father and I spending hours which turned into months playing one game call 'Solaris'.
The game was seemingly never ending, but was great at keeping our attention and had us making elaborate plans on how to get through the next level and even what routes were the best to take through the game. If you've never heard of it, you should give it a quick google. It was released in 1986, but still gets great reviews even 20 years later.
Sadly, my father passed away a good few years ago, but I've carried with me the memory of him playing that game with me for 30 years.
That one small section of my life was the catalyst for me becoming a game developer. I've spent the last year or so making ARC SAVIOR because of him. It doesn't resemble 'Solaris' in any way, and is definitely not as "epileptic" (you'll know if you looked it up :P). But throughout the process of building it, I found myself reflecting a lot about how awesome it was to play games with my dad.
Now, being a father myself, I hope I can pass on that love of gaming. I might even see if I can find an old Atari 2600 to show him :) At the very least, I'll get to show him why grandpa was so awesome and why playing games can be a great way to explore and learn. Hopefully it will also give him the same memories I was privileged enough to experience...
