A few words about locations and level design in our project...

Posted by on

Creation of simple location in ”A short Tale of Solitude” have an beginning during long brainstorm sessions, which have purpose to think about our goals... To shock, depress or allow player to relax – in this purpose we are watching movies and photos, reading a lot of books. Sometimes best ideas are appearing in unexpected time e.g when we are asleep. Often that idea is original and surrealistic, but that's what we are looking for.

The basic rule in designing this game is to not depend on one climate scheme, which gives us an opportunity to create really interesting and nice looking locations. For example: in one place you have a horror scene with little hangman and psychodelic visions in another. However, we would be successful only, when players emotions about locations would give him some thoughts like: “Where am I?”, “What am I going to do?”, “Why am I here?”.

Now I can gladly say, that thing we are making it's no longer a game, it became a “journey”. Story, that we keep in our thoughts, shows our deepest fears and evil hiding inside us. The most interesting for us – designers, is to create some situations, where players could develop themselves further and further. Our game is a combination of thoughts from our previous projects (“Sadness Forrest” and “Solitude”). Those projects helped us with creation brand new product.

Graphics, specially contrast of black and white colors is very important, because they have connections with flashbacks of our characters, which sometimes are just “sick”, but in later game are more acceptable and have more sense. In your journey you'll not find only other kids, but also creatures from their deepest nightmares, because “we fear of the unkown”.
