Just wanted to draw some attention to this amazing plugin (it has a cost, FYI - like 60 bucks)... I am in no way affiliated with this product, but MAN has this been a great tool. In a nutshell, its a skinning modifier that calculates vertex weights by volume, instead of just a linear distance to each bone. This means it calculates a voxel grid for the model, and then determines which bone each vertex is weighted to based on that (so for example it would properly skin a spiraled tail without jumbling up any of the vertices)... I can't even believe skinning isn't like this by default.
Anyway, its saved me a ton of time and often is literally a one click skinning solution (it has some great tweaking tools as well that make it fast when you still have some cleanup to do).
