Should I learn PD or Max first? Thread

I don't know if this is a taboo question or not, but I figured I'd ask. Pure Data seems cool but is there a lot more low level work when compared to Max? The only reason I'm hesitant about learning Max is the price really.

Essentially what I want to do is sound design and composition, so I'd probably have to write a sequencer. I know Radiohead does a lot of this kind of stuff in Max. I guess that's what I intend to do. I guess writing this in the Max subreddit might have some bias, but this place seems more active than the pd~ one.

I've been reading the loadbang tutorial for pd~ lately but haven't dived in any max tutorials yet.
