What is Battle Royale?

Battle royale modes are typically found in shooter games. Some games rely entirely on Battle Royale, while others use the mode as an extension. But what they all have in common is the initial situation. In games like "Fortnite Aim", "PUBG" or "Apex Legends" 60 to 100 players compete against each other. Depending on the game, they can play alone or in teams.

The aim is to eliminate all opponents and in the end to still live as the sole player or team. At the beginning of every Battle Royale game, all players have the same requirements. Without weapons or equipment, the players land on an island and have to equip themselves by randomly distributed loot (weapons, helmets, etc.).

So that the players can also meet in Battle Royale, the play area is reduced in size at regular intervals. The game developers rely on different reasons why the area is getting smaller. In "Fortnite" a storm hits the island. Other games justify this with a ring of fire or an approaching gas cloud. The same thing with all Battle Royale games is that players have to go to a safe zone in order not to be eliminated from the game.

Eliminated players can no longer participate in the game. This makes the big difference to classic death match games, in which players can respawn again after death and participate in the game again. Similar game principles existed before the battle royale hype and were called either last-man-standing or king-of-the-hill.
