In the universe of Grist, Starship Captains exert complete control on the often decades-long trade routes between worlds. To maintain this control they routinely undergo extensive modifications to their bodies and minds, extending their lifespan, and interfacing with the complex sensor and system arrays of the Near Lightspeed Vessels they command. From the fringes of colonized space, however, there has emerged a threat to this power. A cybernetic plague that infects the modifications, corrupting flesh and circuitry alike as it grows and grows, until the Captain is subsumed entirely. Such ships are rumoured to lurk in the dark corners of space, preying on the unwary, driven by a mind no longer human.
