Hi everyone,

Project Canvas is a small multiplayer FPS demo that draws basic gameplay influence from games like Destiny 2's basic movement & shooting. Its set in a modern post apocalyptic world scarred by a nuclear war.

The Team & Who We're Looking For

We're mainly a 2 man team, a 3D generalist & a programmer, but we also have a couple other artists who help out from time to time. Ideally right now we're looking for Concept / Character / Effects Artists, Riggers and Animators (3rd Person or Viewmodel) to join us, but we would love the help of any experienced or intermediate artists or animators who are interested in the project.

I'm a 3D Art student at Gnomon, and our Programmer is a professional network software engineer with over 3 years experience with Unreal engine.

The Goal

Players & fans are always the biggest critics and have a million and one ideas on how to improve their game of choice, this project is in essence putting that to the test by bringing together developers & fans of the FPS genre and addressing some common issues such as the all too often lack of developer transparency, missing quality of life features, "win button" mechanics, and microtransactions or other predatory sales tactics.

Originally the project started as an attempt to take the next step from what several thousand players from the destiny 2 pvp community have accomplished by choosing to play custom games against each other with self imposed rulesets. These rulesets heavily limit the weapons and abilities to a small selection that the community feels is the most fun to play with and against, and maintain some level of competitive balance.

Our main goal is not to create some massive open world, or revolutionize the industry. We're only looking to create a small game that a group of friends can hop on and have some fun playing together. A showcase of what the fps genre has to offer when player experience & enjoyment is the #1 focus. Additionally this project serves as a great learning experience and portfolio piece.

The Project Details

The Demo / Vertical Slice we are working on will feature 3 playable classes each with a couple unique abilities (think Destiny, Overwatch, or any Moba), a small selection of weapons, gamemodes, one finished / polished map, and a couple of greybox maps to choose from. We are working in a realistic high fidelity art style, and while we understand developing art with a high quality bar can be a tall order for a small indie team / passion project, we believe the very small scope of this vertical slice will be well manageable.

Fast paced gameplay & fluid movement with a selection of double jump, grenade, and movement abilities, a small list of objective based gamemodes ranging from 3v3 - 6v6, and a handful of highly polished weapons. If you would like to take a look at our GDD, please let me know. It should give a much more in depth rundown of everything, more than just this bad elevator pitch.

This is a Hobby / Passion project first and foremost. Everyone on the team has their own lives, work, school, etc, and these all take priority over this project. We only ask that you stay in touch, and don't bite off more than you have the free time to chew.

Currently the project is in very early production with the core gameplay systems & player controller in the works, while we're also working on some Weapon & Character models. (Sneak Peek at some WIP models) Development will continue in 4.26 until a stable UE5 release is out, source control is through perforce running on a AWS server, and we mainly communicate through discord.

We plan to release on steam for free once a finished demo is complete.

Thank you for your time,
Justin
