Under its previous name, DwarvesH, this game has over over a year of history. But 2012 marks the introduction of weekly snapshots for the game now known as Dwarves & Holes and these snapshots are a concentrated effort to transform the engine into a game. Counting the first two snapshots, Snapshot 5 marks the one month anniversary of this game! Cheers for many more months!
Snapshot 4 had a huge changelog, but Snapshot 5 brings one big feature and a lot of small tweaks and bugfixes. The new feature is a unified block system that replaces the previous floor/walls system and a set of better polished tools to interact with these blocks. The new block system is easier to grasp and thus easier to interact with. Using color coding, borders and "ghost" blocks, you now have an easier time to navigate the multi level world. Current level switching has been re-enabled and you can toggle between rendering the current level and the one bellow to rendering the current level, the one bellow and the one above. Future snapshots will allow you to tweak on to fly how many levels above/bellow you want to render.
Rather than a long changelog we opted for a short description and a video to show you what Snapshot 5 brings new:
While not playing a part in Snapshot 5, the basics for "diversity" have been put into place. "Diversity" is an approach that will slowly bring diversity to each map that you play by using different models for common items. Bellow you can see six variants of the standard barrel:
In a few hours, after I have uploaded and the approval process finishes, Snapshot 5 will be available in the download section.
