Alien Arena 2011 has been released for Windows and Linux!

Alien Arena 2011 has been released today, for Windows and Linux! It's been six months since our last update of the game, and believe me when I say that it is well worth the wait. The features in this version were planned over a year ago, and the amount of effort and long nights getting things to where they are cannot be underestimated. It wasn't easy, and there were times that we felt like giving up on some items, but we kept plugging away at it.

The main feature of Alien Arena 2011 is the addition of ragdoll physics using the Open Dynamics physics engine. It's amazing how much more fun the game is, and better things look with this feature. Watching an enemy tumble down a staircase, or ricochet off of a wall, will give you the warm fuzzies every time! Just have a look in this video!

Another important feature was the implementation of GNU AutoTools for Linux/Unix/MacOS installations. We no longer ship precompiled binaries with the Linux version, because it is now very easy to compile and install the game without having to worry about dependencies. (see the README file to learn how to install the game for these OS). Along with this, the code was restructured a bit as well, allowing us to make some more optimizations. We also revamped the in-game IRC client signifigantly, added True Type Font support for the console and game messages(the UI is next!), and fixed a host of bugs and made a number of improvements and tweaks.

Of course as with all of our first "year change" releases, we added and improved a good amount of content. Two brand new maps, Dm-annihilation and Dm-neptune were added, and Dm-babel was revamped. Player models/skins were all tweaked and improved, as well as a variety of other random items that we felt needed it. We also added a trio of new songs by the renowned musician Paul Joyce (Pcjcompositions.com). In short, Alien Arena 2011 represents another quantum leap forward in many ways, and we are confident that anyone who enjoys old school deathmatch with modern features will truly enjoy this game!
