So after reading through the article, it seems you didn't get sales because you stopped working on the game. The catch-22 is obvious: you need people to spend money on the game to fund further production. I don't have advice there, but I can tell you why I didn't spend money on Windward:

There wasn't enough to keep me playing the game. The cost versus the quantity and quality of entertainment was not worth it. The direction the game would go with future updates wasn't clear, so I wasn't willing to invest in the future of Windward either.

I invested when it was on sale, but I really would have loved that persistant world...

Will you be adding a "Free" version to the Desura purchase list? Also, will you upload the Linux version to the client? This would help get more eyes on it. What are your future plans...?

Linux has been on the "verge" of being a standard gaming platform for years. I get the feeling Linux as a social phenomenon is trending downward. Seems like there are fewer people actively looking to support Linux games.

If I believed myself knowledgeable on the subject, I wouldn't have used phrases like 'I get the feeling...' or '[It] seems like...'
