Yo! So as we're getting back in the swing of things, I've noticed what tends to gobble up a lot of the team's time - animating. We're looking to primarily cover the Kanto region here, so that's 151 Pokemon to have fully animated and put in-game. The putting in-game part I can do, but the animations on the other hand... well, we'd like some help.
I've gotten loads of requests for positions on this front, so I know a handful of you are interested, and that's perfectly fine! We're essentially looking for some folks who can take a single Pokemon, rig it, and animate it. Should you be chosen, either Skatter, Zielan, or myself will send you a list containing ALL animations required for said Pokemon, along with descriptions for the majority explaining what we expect to see. You'd be looking at about 1000 frames worth of animation, spreading across roughly 60-80 individual animations.
After some discussion with the team, it looks like there will be an average of 60 animations per Pokemon. Note that these are ALL animations that each Pokemon will use, so once it's done, it's done. This includes every move available to them, not just four. I'm pointing this out because I want everyone to be clear on the amount of work it'll require.
Now we're only looking for people seriously interested in helping out by doing the following:
- Can work well with the animation tools provided in either Maya, Blender or 3DS Max.
- Knows how to rig using either bones or bipeds.
- Has a decent understanding of IK chains and morph targets (optional).
- Can improve/edit models to fit rigging needs if necessary.
- Can complete at least one assigned Pokemon within a month.
- Can accept and apply constructive criticism from either the forums or IRC, or both.
Nothing too major here, but we'd truly only like those who can commit to a specific Pokemon and deliver with the same quality matched by the ones currently in games. To be sure of this, we're asking that anybody who's interested email pokegentokes@gmail.com with an example of their capabilities. be it a simple clip of animation or a full-fledged demo reel.
If you're accepted, you will be emailed back inquiring as to which Pokemon you'd like to animate, what we have available, how fast you can do it, and the animations required. Apologies for the formalities, but I just want to be clear that we're taking this semi-seriously, so only email if you are certain you can meet the demands of the project. We'll do our best to answer any questions you may have either on Mod DB or the forums (wherever you're reading this). Hopefully with your guys' help, we can make the best Pokemon fan-game to date! Happy animating!
UPDATE:
Glad to see so many responses so far! We've started responding to the folks that reached out, so expect an email soon if we're interested in your skills!
One thing I ask from future applicants is that you submit your examples of animation as a YouTube video. Unfortunately, we won't be responding to you unless you have an example of work that meets the standards we're looking for. Lucky for you, that's not too high a bar to reach at all!
Anyhow, thank you to all that are helping out. It's a daunting task, but we'll get there eventually!
PS: If you're looking to send your example a little more personally, feel free to hop onto the PokeGen IRC and we'll take a look.

OK
It would be cool if in the next update, or when possible, we could control the Pokémon freely without having to go into battle, making Pidgey flying moose or swim freely with squirtle. It would be like doing a search for the scenario with Pokémon, and then return to the control of the coach.
That is not what the game is aiming for.
There might be sections of explorations like that in the future, but those will only happen in specified areas.
Perhaps some sort of poképark or something?
Why not? I mean, the game is supposedly based on the anime, right? There are times in the show that Ash has his Pokemon perform tasks for him, like having his flying types do a quick search of an area or something similar, I don't see how this is something the game is not "aiming for". It doesn't seem like something too difficult to even code in, technically all the parts for it are there, you just need to make a command key that swaps you're control from you to your Pokemon. Later on, this could even be used to find hidden items or easter eggs, like using something small such as Weedle or Rattata to go through a log into some back area.
If it's not the vision of the person that's making the game, then it's not what the game is aiming for, as simple as that.
You may not like it, or accept it but that's still how things are going to be.
I think its great that you arent doing that because isnt the goal in the anime to catch them all? which you and the team are going to be adding other pokemon later on cant wait for the finished product.

I've animated with my friend before, and we are getting into 3D animation as well, we would love to help! With every upside there is a downside though, were teens. but what a lot of gaming companies don't understand, is that sometimes the people that they aim they're products on can give them amazing ideas! For example, you have made it so Pokèmon can smash others into boulders and even break them in battle mode, my idea is that you can make it so the Pokèmon can do attacks on them any time at all, sometimes reveling items and secret passages, I hope that you would love my help, and again we are teens so we expect no pay whatsoever! Free labor! Or of course we could just give you cool ideas.
That's actually a very cool idea. I would love to see them put Kanto on a new level. I always found Kanto kinda boring compared to other regions, but Xatoku could hopefully bring it about in a cool new way.
Another thing I would like to see is actual quests. Pokemon has never really done this other than like "go catch this pokemon by the end of the day" but I'd like some real crazy quests going on and achievements. That would be dope, so Xatoku, if you see this, please take these ideas for consideration when making the game
good luck guys, I've keeping an eye on this since V.1; I wish i could help and be a bigger part of this project with game development but I have other responsibilities too attend to. although if the team needs some ARTWORK done, I'd be glad to offer my skills for that. if the team is interested, please don;t hesitate to contact me with any questions.
Nice initiative. Good luck!
Errr I really wanna do this but I'm not good enough >.<

i would love to help but i do not have the blender software nor do i know how to do do models.
If you have the motivation, downloading Blender should be the least of your worries.
i'd like too see this go really far
I feel bad that I don't know how to animate/model now :c
Don't feel bad when you can still support the game and encourage the team. Plus, he has tutorials up! Yayy!!!
Haha, thanks :)
Where do I find these tutorials!?
Oops, forgot to sign in haha
