Post news Report RSS Weapons Update

3 Down, 7 to go, as you might not know Version 0.01 will only feature 10 weapons, here it the Spatha, Falcata & Pugio

Posted by on

Hey Guys!
First of all thanks for the Tracks & Comments really motivates me to know there are people supporting this.
You might have noticed the new (Better?) logo & header and the name change, I feel that calling it gladiator was making the game seem too narrow, seeing as it isnt just gladiatorial fighting...hint...hint
The Arena and Prep Area is taking shape and is starting to look like something you will see ingame, but thats an update for another time.
I decided to show you some weapons instead. In my mind I sat a poly budge for myself (1k polys per weapon) I did the Falcata first, gave it decent detail, and saw I barely used half of the poly budget, as for the other 2 as well, so the poly budget is looking good!

Here they are, from top to bottom...

The Spatha
-Easiest to model, (for obvious reasons) looks neat I think.
-342polys

The Falcata
-Now this is one mean looking blade! Had a blast modelling it.
-487polys

The Pugio

-Had the most problems with this one, verts not welding, double edges, but its all fixed and final now.
-393polys

All of them will also be normal mapped for more detail
Spatha, Falcata, Pugio

If you know of weapons that were used between 200 & 400AD and wanna see it in Version 0.01, comment below there are still 6 open spots.

A roman gladius would look awesome

You know it doesnt have to be strictly Roman weapons, gladiators used imported weapons and its n fictional game. As long as the sword was used between 200-400AD.

The shadows make them look a bit plump but I guess texture- and normalmaps will sort that problem out especially when you put them into the game.

Will there be ranged weapons? Then you could add roman pilums, javelins or even bow and arrow. Dart arrows could also be a nice addition though I don't know if they were used by roman gladiators.

But you should really think about adding the gladius since it was the primary sword of roman footsoldiers.

I will later show screenshots of them in CryEngine, dont worry.

Yes there will be ranged weapons, but not in V0.01

And Of course there will be a gladius (mainz), I have done extensive research on my topic.

Nice. I'm looking forward to those screenshots.

How long did the modelling process take you? I'm just curious.

Didn't really pay attention to the time, but im pretty sure it took around 1H per weapon, with 3DS MAX crashing twice in between.

looks great but why does the first one have so many polys? seems unnecessary

Because of the round handle, but if optimisation is required I will take some from the weapons, but im still in range of my poly budget.

Really some great work here. Another suggestion would be the Egyptian Khopesh! I believe its reign stretched into your range aswell plus it looks badass!

I have the Khopesh on my list, but if you can give me a link that verifies that the Arabian saif is from that period ill make it aswell.

The prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) had a gold-plated one, he was mentioned to be dual wielding Saifs on horse back during one battle (not easy to do) and his cousin Ali had a famous one named "Thu AL-Fiqar" which was bifurcated at the end. This puts it at 600 A.D. however there are many MANY poems pre-Islam that mention the Saif well before 400 A.D. however all of them are in Arabic. I'll let you know if I find a translated one.

Whaha I enjoyed that! Ill think about it, the game is set in a fictional world anyway, but im trying to keep it in that era, so if I wont have historians raging at me for putting that weapon in the era ill do it.
