Explanation and details about the dynamic water system that is used in Vox.

Posted by on

Water is Vox will be very different from water in other 3D voxel based games, and will allow the player much more freedom and possibilities when using water in their world.

The water system is a much more dynamic system than the usual water models seen in games such as Minecraft and having a much more realistic water model enhances the gameplay and also presents the player with a more vivid world.

The types of fluids that will be available in Vox will be:

  • Water
  • Oil
  • Lava
  • Poison (Swamp)
  • Slime

Each different type of fluid will exhibit different properties and thus will interact with the environment in different ways. For example oil will be flammable and when interacting with fire with cause explosions and spreading fires, slime will be much more jelly like and wont spread out as much or as fast as other fluids, poison and swap water will damage the player when they are inside it.

Here is a video demonstrating the dynamic water system used in Vox:

Already it is quite clear that adding a more realistic water simulation will make the game more fun and enjoyable for the players in a number of ways.

Some examples of how water might be used in a game of Vox to enhance gameplay:

  • Quests that involve water flow, getting water from one location to another using the physical properties of water and fluids.
  • Dynamic weather system; rain water accumulates and modifies the landscape to create lakes and rivers.
  • Water properties affect objects in the world, i.e flowing water will carry away the player or other monsters/NPCs
  • Certain types of fluid might be required to make items in the game. For example poison water might be needed to create a restoration or cure potion. Lava needs to be collected into a secure(metal) bucket before being applied to weapons to enhance them with fire properties.

Hopefully this give you some more insight into the water simulation and plans for Vox.
