Natural Selection 2 just won ModDB's Indie Game of the Year! There you'll see the first game footage of the skulk, marine, gorge, command station, the sentry and a marine base chock full of marine toys. Many thanks to all of you who voted for us!

Natural Selection 2 just won ModDB's Indie Game of the Year!

In addition, we've uploaded a higher quality version of the footage used in the Mod DB award presentation. This is pre-alpha footage of the game, so it's a little rough around the edges. Normally we only like to release media that's polished (you guys can be so critical!), but we wanted to say "thanks" to everyone who supported us, even if everything isn't optimized and there are some glitches.

Friday Update Build 136
February 5, 2010

We have another update to the Spark SDK for everyone who has pre-ordered Natural Selection 2. The Spark SDK is the package which includes the level editor, viewer, and model and texture creation tools for Natural Selection 2.

Most of our engine/tools effort this week was spent making improvements to the game, so there are only a few changes to the Editor in this patch. Here's the complete list of changes:

  • Added rendering of the world axes in the Viewer
  • Improved asset thumbnail rendering for models
  • Fixed bug where custom colors add in the color picker would not be remembered when selecting another entity
  • Fixed missing textures on props

If you've already installed the Spark SDK, it will automatically detect the update and give you the option to install when the editor is launched. If you haven't installed the Spark SDK before, use the link below to download the installer. Note that in order to run the tools in the SDK you will need your game key.

Download ns2_setup.exe (353.8M)

Thanks again to everyone who voted for us!

The long awaited ingame footage! I watched the IGOTY video so many times just for this.

When will the beta be ready to be played by the people who pre-ordered?

I'm sure the answer is "when its done" ;)

Personally I think they'll try to release something big on halloween - either the beta or the 1.0 - we'll see :)

Remember, this is "pre-alpha" footage. Which means next comes the alpha, then the beta, just to be technical.

According to the UWE website, they are working hard on getting the alpha playable as soon as possible.

I can't wait for this! The mod is amazing, and if the game is half as good as the mod it will be one of the best games out there.

Both games target different markets and have their own perks. Don't compare.

You wouldn't compare Starcraft & NS2 in terms of Gameplay, would you?:P(Kind of an easy one to do though.)

It's like comparing apple's and pears, both are fruit but they're not the same, sure you can compare but it's not as fitting a comparison as comparing different apple's together!

I think he's comparing the graphics, actually. In which case, I agree; NS2 does LOOK better than AVP2

lol no way graphics are definitely where AvP3 get way ahead. I think one thing that AvP should maybe consider in new releases for MP is the whole building side for marines and upgrades for aliens. That would be where NS is more exciting. Just remember that AvP3 has awesome graphics and a pred that would kick the onus' *** lol. Both sweet games, but obviously a lot more money and time spent on AvP3

Woohoo!

Still a good WIP, but nonetheless people have been clamoring for footage like this for weeks. Turns out they don't just make Spark SDK patches all day!

You're right, a lot of people assume that with the constant Spark updates, the team isn't working much on the actual game. In reality, this is quite the opposite of the truth. The Spark updates just happen to be good things to post about, but take up only a small portion of dev time. Max is working on the game engine and Charlie writes the NS2 game code.

You can read more about it in the last news article:

I'm very impressed with the Spark Engine. The amount of detail and shading pushed into the environments is commendable....animations are a bit rough around the edges, but hey, it's pre-alpha. :D

Kudos!

I've always loved NS1 and looking forward to the next incarnation! Are there still servers up for NS1?

This doesn't deserve game of the year there wasn't even a public beta for it in 2009 they made some pretty pics and pretty vids and gave some info for all we know this could totally blow. It is not right to give a game that wasn't released in the year game of the year thats like saying Uncharted 2 game of the year 2005

I understand your point of view however it's the player's choice and the players of this community are veterans of mods. Many people in the community fondly remember playing NS1 and they believe that NS2 will clearly follow the NS1 formula which made it so enjoyable to begin with. So, we can extrapolate the game play of NS2 using NS1 as a comparison and know what the game play will be like in advance.

NS2 won the ">Upcoming< indie game of the year", not the "Indie game of the year"... theres a difference - but since both groups were put together in the evaluation process it effectively kicked out some already released games.

Still very deserved win.

the title clearly says NS2 Wins Indie Game of the Year!
and give me all the negative votes you want any fanboy here just doesn't want to hear the truth. A UNRELEASED GAME DOESN'T DESERVE IGOTY

Well that was their Engine of choice originally, so it's not so odd that it is. I mean they owe everything to the original engine, and started making this on the Source Engine, but built their own Engine to allow for their own custom effects and such, but of course they'd make it along the lines of Source.

Plus, have you SEEN the System requirements? VERY MODEST.

Didn't know it was originally made on Source, that changes some thoughts. But if they were stepping up to a new engine, why wouldnt they remake the original content they had to make it live up to the new engine. Im still impressed at this game though, its just that the pictures they had made the game look much better.

Well, screenshots always look better then the final game.

For example, the Crysis screenshots, screenshots of Bad Company 2, ect.

They force 16x AF / 32x Mixed AA and take the screenshot and air-brush it some to make it "DAMN" quality.

Quick Question: Would I be able to use my preorder code on my other computer to get the spark editor and/or game? I don't want to preorder just to use it on one computer.

I am not entirely sure, but I am guessing you can install the game/editor on any number of computers. The limitation would be that you can only run 1 instance of the game at any time. Similar to the way Steam works. But again, that's just my guess.
