Ill keep this brief...its late. I must sleep. And dream of NovaCor...

Posted by on

Most if not all of you think NovaCor met the fate of most other Mods. It may have; it may not have. NovaCor is not dead, but not alive either. I dont know how else to explain it.

What happened to halt development was the Source SDK update that happened right around when the Mod short-circuited. And thats about literally what happened. The update broke nearly everything I had done with the AI. Most of the maps were shoved halfway off the Hammer Grid, so they were completely ruined. It was like Valve decided to take months of work and just toss it into a blender, then turn it on while Gabe stared me dead in the eye.

But Im left with all the assets, the ideas, and the memory of what I had. I still have everything hiding out on a storage drive, occasionally peeking out, looking around and disappearing again. I still brainstorm levels when I have down time, and story, and all of the things I did before. I just havent done anything tangible in months....years even. The final nail in the - well, the Mod isnt dead so there arent any nails in any coffins yet. Anyway, the last straw was my animator and modeler drifting off and ceasing production. I dont do those things and having done everything else, there simply wasnt time and wont be time to learn to make complex models and animate them too.

And so, NovaCor is not quite dead, but not yet alive. It is in a slumber. However, I was bitten by the Modding bug and that never goes away. I recently dumped a few weeks time into a 7 Days To Die Mod. It was simple, remedial modding at best. Something I knew I could accomplish alone, or with the help of a few friendly forum-goers. And I did. That project will be live on my Dedi tomorrow.

And who knows. I may just fire up the Source SDK again.

Man, that is just a sad shame, I've been watching it for years but I must admit it slipped my mind after 2013.

I can only imagine putting so much work into something, only for an update to grind it into the ground. It must have gutted you D:

But at least you still have the data, a power surge and a fried Hard Drive had killed plenty of mods before with nothing remaining. So that's one positive.

Best of luck in your future endeavors, Agent Kevin :)

i wish i could hep but i can't (as i don't know how) im a bit bummed to be honest but with all the setbacks i can't say i didn't see the writing on the wall. i hope you do find the inspiration and/or help to finish this as its a great looking project that would be a shame not to see through to completion.

She isnt dead yet Jim.

I want to get back into this. There was a lot of promise despite some of the setbacks.

What will happen if I do indeed start over with NovaCor is that there will be a long quiet period until one day I post a bombshell. That is how I did 7DTD and how I will do Mods in the future. I think a large portion of the pressure comes from publicizing it too early and promising things too early. That wont happen again.

The Mod still wants to be made, and I still want to make it - especially with Greenlight. I have a feeling that if I invest the time and effort, I can find people to help with the things I need help with. The clan Ive been in for years now has people in the industry who have expressed interest in models for 7DTD and others have expressed interest as well. Its definitely not over yet, and who knows...I may be closer than I think.

Good to hear it's not -completely- dead.

I still feel kinda bad for up and leaving after more or less promising a fair bit (though I recall materializing a good fraction of the goals,) but I pretty much had no choice. :( Sadly, my modding days are pretty much over.

If you do intend on continuing it on Source and need a bit of help with the 2013 SDK (compiling the binaries, etc) feel free to send me a PM and I might be able to help a bit or give a few answers at least.

NovaCor is definitely a special project. Everything you've created exemplifies the passion and craftsmanship you put into your work. I'm sure whatever it is you create will display the same amount of care and will be definitely worth the wait if you decide to continue. :)

hey Kevin, if people want your mod, that means its not dead. you should switch to a game engine and turn it into a actuall game. Source sucks, I helped to make Deathwing for left for dead 2, and source was horrible we ran into the exact same problems, every update mod completely broken. On source you have to perpetually update your mods indefinately its rediculus. the engine has looked like crap since it came out any way most of the success of source if counter strike and half life, which where propelled to success by game play value not grafics, ( as these two games never had outstanding graphics, even for the time they where released) there is so much love for those two games, and garrys mod that people will always say, oh source is awesome. but dont be fooled source sucks, the level editors have always sucked real bad. hope the best for you and your mod though

btw, source is actually quake 2 engine, that is why the geomtry always sucks. and probly why thier grid was always bugged. like ever wonder why its so hard to make a archway with more than a few polies, with out the geomtry deforming horribly. thats why most source maps are square, except models.
