Post news Report RSS New multiplayer server browser

I just finished the multiplayer server browser for Overgrowth. This is a completely integrated server browser to let you find multiplayer servers to play on. What features from GameSpy, Steam, etc. should I borrow to make it optimal?

Posted by on

I recently finished the UI for the server browser in Overgrowth.

This will let you browse all of the multiplayer Overgrowth servers and easily choose the one you want from within the game. Check it out! (Note that the server names and such are just random Quake servers I found for testing.)

Overgrowth Server Browser
Click for the full version

It's pretty straightforward. When you click on a server, it sort of pops out with an animation (you can see for yourself next week) and you can join the server. I'm thinking of putting some more info in the extra space that pops out, but I'm not sure yet.

We are really flexible with the UI. Are there any cool features in GameSpy, GameRanger, etc. that you'd like to see in Overgrowth? (permalink)

I would like to see a list of servers friends are playing on, and an option to instantly join one.

If you guys haven't, I'd recommend checking out the UI of S2Games' Heroes of Newerth. It's absolutely THE best UI I've ever seen.
About features, I agree with Noremakk. Being able to see in which server your friends are playing and easily joining them is the most valuable one for the player.

I disagree. Any game that doesn't let you filter on the most basic of attributes such as full server, or ping is instantly a failure. Please don't replicate their server browser.

Every time a developer doesn't add the ability to filter servers based on ping, god kills a kitten.

And every time a developer doesn't add the ability to filter servers based on ping, I go and play an other game.

Sometimes a "connect to IP" button is useful too, because with a lot of games I can't see the server my friend is playing on, so we use the IP-method.
But a "Friends are playing on these servers" - list is better.. that is, if it doesn't suck as much as the one in Battlefield Heroes :/

Agreed, if Overgrowth doesn't have a ping filter, then you've essentially killed off the entire Australian market because we won't play anything if its over 200Ms (unless its an MMO).

The screenshot is sorted by ping. ;) Already implemented.

That's not what they have been asking for. They ask for "filtering" not "sorting". The two are different things.

Oh, you mean just remove them entirely instead of banishing them to the bottom of the list? That is trivial, but I'll have to think of a way to not clutter up the UI. Suggestions welcome!

Alright, implemented for real now. There is a sweet filter tray that animates in when you press a "Show Filters" button now which includes a few of the requested filters.

Trivial? What the ****? Are you serious? I sense a bad design decision impending. Please don't ever say something like that when referring to one of the most important elements in software and game design, the UI.

Filtering is INCREDIBLY important for plenty of reasons. What if you wanted to "sort" by low ping servers and empty servers? Why do I still have to look at them in my potential server list and clutter up my screen with servers I can't even play in? All because you thought it was "trivial"? Pffft.

In the space that pops out, I'd put either a small description on the server that the host writes himself or a list of friends on the server (or just the people on the server), or just anything that wouldn't make that space wasted but still provide valuable information about the server. Either way, I love the sleek look of the UI and this game in general. Keep up the awesome work!

Yeah, that is a good idea. I will try to figure out a way to have that in there and make it look cool. :)

maybe this has already been said, but I'm getting a rather strange OS X vibe from this game's GUI. (thats a good thing lol)

I remembered something. It would be great if, when refreshing, the servers are added to the bottom of the list (not the top), so I can double-click to join it without worrying about misclicking and entering a completely different one.

I second this.

*Hate* it when that happens.

Again this can be helped by filtering the servers by ping so within a few seconds you have all the servers under 200ms say and then you're ready to go.

Just added a few more filters, including a high ping filter. There is a sweet filter tray that animates in. ;)

The way it works right now is that when you click refresh, it loads all the servers at the exact same time (Google App Engine is fast!). Once all the servers have appeared, they start out with a spinner in the ping columns. As the servers are pinged, this spinner changes into the actual ping. The only time the servers will get shuffled around in real time is if you are sorting by the ping.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for reminding me to make double clicking a shortcut to join servers!

Can you add a option with favourite servers? Maybe something like "Add server to favourites" and after that, you select something like internet/lan/favourites and there you got the favourite servers, its nice to have servers without searching them over again..

looks really awesome and pretty easy to navigate, but it would be cool if u could put the logo of Overgrowth in the background of that, instead of just gray, not sure if its possible though.....

I talked to a user named Sed on the MIBBIT wolffire Mirc and he confirmed that there has been a mp test..but since this is long outdated info this should be deleted to not confuse more. I was told this was a post by one of the devs brothers, is this correct ?
