The main advantage of these vertical architectures is that they save space because you can place all the factories above each other.
You can then plant the saved land with food because you need a lot of it for survival and also for expansion.
Why you need food for expansion, I hear you asking.
Because from food you make a biomass which works as recharging fuel for Golems.
And Golems help you with faster expansion.
